Job Description

Weekend Editor, The Verge at Vox Media

WHO WE ARE

The Verge is an ambitious multimedia effort founded in 2011 to examine how technology will change life in the future for a massive mainstream audience.

The Verge is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As our weekend News Editor, you’ll be single-handedly responsible for covering the news crucial to The Verge’s readers on Saturdays and Sundays. On Monday through Wednesday, you’ll join a team of reporters and editors racing to publish the sharpest angles and best analysis on the essential tech news of the day, keeping our savvy audience informed and delighted.

This is a Full-Time role and each week you’ll:

  • Gather stories from news feeds and spot breaking news across a wide array of sources

  • Curate our front page on weekends

  • Write news

  • Edit news stories from both seasoned reporters and junior writers

WHO YOU ARE

Candidates should have a fierce passion for consumer technology news; you should feel a constant need to know what’s happening in the world of platforms and gadgets, and a desire to deliver the best story before anyone else. Do you spend your weekends on Twitter dissecting the news? We’d love to chat! We’re looking for someone who’s excited to watch news feeds, vet stories, deliver sharp headlines and angles, and who can switch gears at a moment’s notice to put breaking news on the site themselves.

Ideal candidates will have substantial experience in either editing short-form news stories, self-publishing, or both. The ability to identify and write a great lede is a must.

Being our weekend editor is a big responsibility with a huge amount of potential. Working independently, you’ll need to assess, write, and fact check stories with care and rigor to make sure the site is always at its best. You’ll also be able to shape what our site looks like on the weekends, bringing a mix of important news and geeky levity to readers on their days off.

If you think you have what it takes, but don’t meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We’ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.

WHERE YOU’LL WORK

This job is remote. We’re dedicated to the health and wellbeing of all of our employees, and when we reopen, will require everyone who works from one of our offices to be fully-vaccinated against COVID-19. Employees with approved religious or medical exemptions may be subject to additional safety requirements, such as submitting to regular COVID-19 testing and/or wearing a face covering in our offices.
