Job Description

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures of the University of Hawai’i at Mnoa invites applications for a full time, tenure-track position in Japanese Language Pedagogy at the level of Assistant Professor to start Fall 2027, pending position clearance and availability of funds.

The Department of EALL is among the largest departments of its kind in the country and offers a curriculum unparalleled in its breadth and scope in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language, linguistics, literature, and culture. We offer B.A. degrees in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean; MA & PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures, with concentrations on Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Linguistics and Literature.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Teach undergraduate content courses and Japanese language courses (introductory to advanced);
2. Teach graduate courses in area of specialization;
3. Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students;
4. Serve on thesis/dissertation committees;
5. Maintain an active agenda of scholarly research and publication in area(s) of specialization;
6. Contribute service at the department, college, university, and community levels;
7. Other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Japanese Language, Japanese Linguistics, or closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing (ABD will be considered; all requirements for degree must be completed by August 2027);
2. Demonstrated experience in teaching at the college level;
3. Demonstrated expertise in Japanese pedagogy;
4. Evidence of scholarly activity in the field of specialization;
5. High level of proficiency in Japanese and English;
6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Ability to develop courses in interdisciplinary fields;
2. Demonstrated experience in mentoring and service at the college level;
3. Research capability in an additional area of Japanese linguistics beyond Japanese Pedagogy
