The Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine Division is made of up approximately 70 clinical staff and over 100 research staff who work in a variety of locations including: Bridgeside Point, Biomedical Science Tower (BST), UPMC Hospitals including Presbyterian, Shadyside, East, Jameson and Mercy. The division provides world class services across 10 inpatient services at five hospitals and over 70,000 outpatient office visits. We have a major research mission that focuses on basic, clinical, and translational research on the lung, microbiome, COVID-19, sleep medicine, and allergy and immunology.

Performs routine laboratory tasks supporting Organ-on-Chip, organoid, and other studies, cell biology, and molecular biology work under direct supervision. Prepares chips, seeds and maintains cell cultures, collects samples, and keeps accurate records. Support other cell culture studies needs of the lab.

Job Summary

Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.

Essential Functions

• Prepare various Organs-on-Chip for cell seeding.
• Seed cells into chips and generate organoids; maintain chips in culture, including media changes; prepare and maintain the cells in culture prior to chip seeding, organoid preparation, and as needed.
• Collect cells/samples for analysis and assist with endpoint assays.
• Keep detailed, accurate records; sterilize equipment and maintain supplies.
• Work as part of a team and learn required techniques under guidance.

Physical Effort

Standing for up to 8 hours; working in wet bench lab space standing and sitting; ability to receive and move deliveries to the lab; ability to follow all necessary research and operation protocols; fine motor work with small devices and pipettes.
