University of Maryland Capital Region Health (UM Capital) is seeking a Family Medicine Sickle Cell Clinical Scholar to join our team in Largo, Maryland. Your role will blend three meaningful areas of medicine:

Sickle Cell Care

Approximately half of your position will be dedicated to caring for patients living with sickle cell disease. You’ll work alongside the Sickle Cell Medical Director, hematologists, and an interdisciplinary care team, gaining focused clinical experience while helping patients navigate both the day-to-day and long-term complexities of their care.

Full-Spectrum Family Medicine

Maintain and expand your Family Medicine skills through scheduled clinical coverage across ambulatory care, the newborn nursery, and inpatient medicine, providing preventive, acute, and chronic disease care across a variety of settings.

Academic Medicine & Teaching

Step into a meaningful Family Medicine core faculty role, with protected administrative time to teach, mentor, and support residents, interns, and medical students while contributing to the continued growth of our educational programs.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will:

• Provide evidence-informed, longitudinal care to patients living with sickle cell disease.
• Partner with hematology and other specialists to coordinate complex, multidisciplinary care.
• Support preventive care, health maintenance, screenings, wellness, and monitoring of organ health.
• Manage complex sickle cell conditions through established consultation, co-management, and escalation pathways.
• Provide comprehensive Family Medicine care, including preventive services, acute care, chronic disease management, and care coordination.
• Participate in scheduled ambulatory, newborn nursery, and inpatient clinical coverage.
• Collaborate closely with physicians, nurses, specialists, and allied health professionals.
• Teach and mentor Family Medicine residents, interns, and medical students.
• Fulfill core faculty educational and administrative responsibilities while continuing to develop your own academic interests.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a physician who is curious, collaborative, compassionate, and excited by the opportunity to develop expertise while caring for a diverse patient population.

Required qualifications include:

• MD, DO, or international equivalent from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
• Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited Family Medicine residency by the position start date.
• Board certified or board eligible in Family Medicine.
• Current unrestricted Maryland medical license or eligibility to obtain one.
• Current federal DEA registration or eligibility to obtain one.

An interest in sickle cell disease, health equity, academic medicine, resident education, complex care, and interdisciplinary collaboration is especially welcome.
