University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC) is seeking a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our Neurosurgery team in Glen Burnie, Maryland.

This is an opportunity to work alongside physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals caring for patients with complex neurological and neurosurgical needs – combining advanced clinical care, procedures, collaboration, and patient education in a role where no two days are quite the same.

You’ll work with direct support from our neurosurgeon while having opportunities to expand your procedural skill set, including learning bedside external ventricular drain (EVD) placement. Interested in the OR? There are opportunities for that, too – but OR participation is not required.

What You’ll Do

As a Neurosurgery APP, you’ll be an active member of the care team, helping manage patients throughout their course of care.

Your responsibilities may include:

• Performing comprehensive patient examinations and evaluations
• Obtaining histories and assessing new and established patients
• Developing diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up recommendations
• Ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic testing
• Managing medications and other therapeutic interventions within your scope of practice
• Collaborating closely with neurosurgeons, nursing, case management, referring providers, and other members of the multidisciplinary team
• Providing clear education to patients and families about diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and next steps
• Performing advanced procedures and supporting surgical needs as appropriate
• Providing wound care, dressing changes, and wound closure
• Reviewing and interpreting laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic findings
• Maintaining thorough and timely clinical documentation
• Helping coordinate safe, efficient, patient-centered care across the continuum

Depending on clinical needs and scope of practice, procedural responsibilities may also include skills such as line placement, venipuncture, ultrasound-guided procedures, NG tube placement, and other advanced bedside procedures.

You’ll also have the opportunity to develop additional neurosurgical procedural skills, including bedside EVD placement, with direct support and guidance from the neurosurgeon.

Schedule & Coverage

This position is designed to support a growing neurosurgical service and will include a combination of 8- and 12-hour coverage.

Candidates should be comfortable with a schedule that includes night and weekend coverage. Initially, portions of this coverage will be provided through a call model, with the longer-term goal of transitioning to 24/7 in-hospital coverage as the program continues to develop.

For APPs interested in the surgical side of neurosurgery, OR opportunities are available but are not required for this position. This provides flexibility to develop a role that incorporates operative exposure while maintaining a strong focus on inpatient and bedside neurosurgical care.

What You’ll Bring

Candidates should meet the education, certification, and licensure requirements applicable to their Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner pathway and scope of practice.

We’re also looking for:

• Current or eligible Maryland licensure
• Current BLS certification, or ability to obtain it before providing direct patient care
• DEA/CDS eligibility, as applicable
• Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication
• The ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines
• Willingness to participate in night and weekend coverage
  
• Interest in developing advanced neurosurgical procedural skills, including bedside EVD placement
  
• A commitment to patient safety and high-quality care

Neurosurgery, neurology, surgery, critical care, hospital medicine, or other relevant acute-care experience is a plus.
