Location: Remote; must work Eastern Time hours and travel to site for meetings

Pay Rate: $80.00 – $84.00/hour

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm Eastern Time

Duration: 6 months with possible extension

Description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Search Engineer to lead the technical design, development, and optimization of enterprise search and conversational AI solutions. This hands-on role combines search engineering, relevance optimization, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and generative AI to help users find accurate, relevant information.

The successful candidate will build and improve search pipelines, integrate AI services, troubleshoot production systems, and provide technical guidance across application and infrastructure teams. Candidates with strong hands-on Lucidworks Fusion experience are strongly preferred over those whose experience is limited to other search platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and optimization of enterprise search solutions using Lucidworks Fusion or comparable platforms.
  • Build lexical, semantic, vector, and hybrid search capabilities, including relevance tuning, boosting, filtering, facets, and synonyms.
  • Develop single-turn and multi-turn conversational search and RAG experiences incorporating intent recognition, query rewriting, session context, grounding, citations, and fallback behavior.
  • Integrate enterprise large language model (LLM) services, AI services, and REST APIs with appropriate security, performance, and cost controls.
  • Establish search relevance benchmarks, quality metrics, and automated regression tests.
  • Troubleshoot search pipelines, APIs, Solr, AWS and Kubernetes environments, model endpoints, and application integrations.
  • Collaborate with Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), front-end, product, AI, cloud, security, and architecture teams.
  • Implement Git workflows, CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, and configuration-as-code practices.
  • Create technical documentation, architecture diagrams, runbooks, and knowledge-transfer materials.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience in search engineering, information retrieval, or enterprise application development.
  • Hands-on experience with an enterprise search platform such as Lucidworks Fusion, Solr/Lucene, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, Algolia, Vespa, or Azure AI Search.
  • Experience with semantic and vector search, embeddings, hybrid ranking, and relevance optimization.
  • Experience developing RAG solutions, including grounding, prompt design, citations, and AI guardrails.
  • Experience supporting AWS and Kubernetes in production environments.
  • Proficiency in Java and/or Python, JSON, REST APIs, Git, automated testing, and CI/CD.
  • Strong understanding of search schemas, analyzers, tokenization, synonyms, faceting, boosting, filtering, relevance scoring, connectors, and query debugging.
  • Strong technical leadership, communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong hands-on Lucidworks Fusion experience, particularly Fusion 5.x implementation, upgrades, or administration. This is the highest-priority preferred qualification.
  • Experience with Fusion AI, RAY, Learning-to-Rank, Relevance Workbench, Analytics Studio, Commerce Studio, or A/B testing.
  • Experience integrating search with AEM, commerce platforms, product catalogs, digital assets, or document services.
  • Experience with session stores such as Redis, multilingual search, SKU/part-number search, permissions-aware retrieval, or structured and unstructured content.
  • Knowledge of secure and responsible AI development, privacy, accessibility, and production monitoring.
  • Relevant search, cloud, or AI certifications.
